Tata, The Rockefeller Foundation Plan 10,000 India Microgrids. TATA Power will set up a new unit, TP Renewable Microgrid Ltd., to build the microgrids through 2026 that will serve nearly 5 million homes in India’s countryside & impact 25 million people. Tata Power continues to transform itself and be at the forefront driving the Energy Revolution.
TATA Power & The Rockefeller Foundation announced the launch of TP Renewable Microgrid, which will provide clean power to 50 lakh homes and will amplify the Government of India’s ongoing campaign to provide electricity to rural india Excellent opportunity for US and Indian firms to collaborate to make green microgrids and make huge amount of money.
This company is one of the largest integrated players in the electricity sector of India and possibly globally as well, certainly in terms of numbers of customers (they are present in all stages of the electricity value chain including thermal and solar generation (even manufacturing solar panels), privately owned transmission lines (including cross border transmission to Bhutan) and retail electricity distribution in Delhi, Mumbai etc.
Now they are going into micro-grids (recall that recently it was not kosher to talk about micro-grids, since the Saubhagya scheme was extending the main grid all over the country–and that was done, so almost all “willing” households now have a grid connection, but remote areas with small loads probably get very limited electricity service from their discoms).
I think the localized generation part of micro-grids is still very much needed, at the grid edge, and this latest micro-grids initiative may be more about localized generation, thereby boosting hours of supply, and selling electricity to discoms who are operating Saubhagya grids but don’t have enough power supply. The most awaited sustainable energy solution has finally been launched! Tata Power launches TP Renewable Microgrid supported by the The Rockefeller Foundation, a device that’ll help maximize the efficiency of a renewable resources.
An interesting experiment by Tata Power at times when Union Govt is trying to make power accessible 24×7 across India. My understanding based on the facts in article is that the major targeted customers in this are enterprises, and farmers who require uninterrupted supply for their farming needs. Various schemes like KUSUM, Feeder Segregation, 24×7 Power for All, DDUGJY launched by Govt are targeting the same needs and have provision for off-grid as well. It needs to be seen what value can be added by this, apart from reaching rural/remote places which the Govt. schemes have already been doing.
India’s largest integrated power company Tata Power has partnered with The Rockfeller Foundation to launch what is considered as the world’s largest microgrid developer ‘TP Renewable Microgrid’. TP Renewable Microgrid Ltd. anticipates supporting 100,000 rural enterprises, creating 10,000 new green jobs, and providing irrigation for over 400,000 local farmers.
Empowering Millions of Indians With Renewable Microgrid Electricity: Tata Power and The Rockefeller Foundation announced the launch of TP Renewable Microgrid Ltd, which will address one of the most pervasive challenges in modern India: the lack of access to affordable, reliable electricity for millions of rural homes and enterprises.
Around 700 million people in India’s rural communities have limited to no access to electricity, but new technologies — including microgrids, solar, energy storage and biomass — and business models are evolving which could provide a reliable, sustainable and scalable supply of electricity. Solar microgrids powering remote villages in Leh & Kargil by lighting over 35 villages, offsetting 3000 tonnes CO2 per year.
